I Sent a Suggestion to Pinterest in High School
And now it’s a key part of their platform.
LOL.
When I was a junior in high school, I discovered the, at the time, newly-launched Pinterest platform.
From the get-go I was an avid user. It was a great resource school projects, photography inspo for my budding high school photo business😉, and just a good ol’ fashioned time waster.
My tendency to categorize, like, everything in my life (which helps with my ADHD maaaajorly) plus my infatuation with Pinterest was this young creative’s gold mine.
After learning how to use Pinterest then having used it for a short period of time, I found myself wanting to have subcategories (ie Sections) within each board, something they didn’t have at the time.
I remember sitting in the photo lab, looking up how to get in touch to Pinterest HQ, then proceeded to write a short and sweet email with my oh so valuable suggestion. ;)
Granted, it wasn’t implemented for another 5-6 years—HA!—but when they launched the update, I was one happy camper. Also, I know that my one measly email wasn’t the reason why they added sections, but hey, when a big company does something notable and your teenage self was ahead of the curve, it’s a big personal win. For me at least. 😝
I say all of this because I now use Pinterest as a role in my business. I have my clients create Pinterest boards as an exercise at the beginning of the branding process. As a visual thinker, it’s become an essential communication tool. Seeing the specific things they gravitate towards helps me envision, even if the board is filled with colored sweaters, greenhouses, and Hallmark greeting cards.
So, yeah, I basically changed the course of the internet. ;))))
