Style Personality: Trendsetter

The way we dress says a lot about who we are. We can communicate so much without saying a word, simply by what we choose to put on our bodies at any given time.

This topic has intrigued me for as long as I can remember, both the kind of personal style that I want to create and the way others express themselves.

Personal style is a key role in the tapestry of self-expression. Our clothes, accessories, and overall appearance are not just about fashion, they tell a story about who we are, what we value, and how we see the world. Note: I believe style and fashion are not one in the same. Fashion tends to address trends and time-specific designs. Style extends beyond both.

When it comes to what you wear and how you wear it, your essence comes through and communicates on your behalf, even if you’re not trying to communicate anything specifically.

I mapped out how different traits and characteristics come through via six specific style personalities:

  • Casual

  • Chic

  • Edgy

  • Low Key

  • Quirky

  • Trendsetter

Today, we’re going to focus specifically on the traits of those who have a trendsetting style.

When it comes to aesthetics and interests, trendsetters tend to naturally take the lead with their vision and enthusiasm. Because of this, people spend their time, attention, and even money to get a little piece of the trendsetter pie. Note: Trendsetters and influencers are also not one in the same. Influencers are more likely to be swayed by particular brands and/or opportunities to share products, items of clothing, designs, etc. Authentic trendsetters are more interested in what pleases themselves than what’s currently on-trend. Whether by means of innovation, thriftiness, adaptability, or all of the above, they often embrace being a reference point for others.

The choices and actions trendsetters make impacts others, intentional or not. People pick up on confidence, passion, and quality, most, if not all, of which they possess. Because they regularly stay true to their values and aesthetics, that consistency often resonates with others and enhances trendsetters’ influence. They’re a magnet to those who seek inspiration.

In many ways, they’re persistent and resilient, not easily discouraged by failures or setbacks. Those are just lessons, anyway. And when they lead with their passions, it fuels their drive to innovate and inspire.

Because they exude self-assurance and are comfortable with taking risks, they naturally put themselves at the front of the crowd (or in some cases, perhaps on a stage above said crowd).

All that said, personal style empowers us, connects us with others, and adapts as we grow. It’s a vital form of self-expression that reflects our individuality, values, and creativity.
