What does your home say about you? How does your home make you feel?

I hosted a housewarming party earlier this month. While looking around, a few guests pointed out how my home decor matches me. “It doesn't look like it was all just bought at Ikea or Target.” No shade to Ikea or Targét. but, damn straight it wasn't! It's been years of collecting and refining.

So, today, I’m sharing my approach to home decor.

Our homes are more than just places we live; they’re extensions of our personality, just like the way we dress. There are plenty of ways to infuse your personal style into interior styling. Here's what I've found to be a solid baseline:

  1. Patience. Look, I know instant gratification has its pros. But personality comes from interesting designs, quality materials, colorful pasts.

  2. Thrift. While thrifting also takes patience, it's where the golden nuggets are (at least, the golden nuggets that you don't have to pay the price of literal gold). BTW another tip specific to thrifting: go often and expect to leave empty-handed.

  3. Know your vibe. Everyone has different styles, obviously. Get a feel for things you like and don't like. Pinterest is a great tool for this.

  4. Art. Display artwork that brings you joy. Support small businesses/artists. Art does a lot of the legwork to reflect your interests and style.

  5. Mixed textures. Even if you gravitate to minimal style, having a variety of textures, even within one room, elevates the environment beautifully.

  6. Lighting. Overhead lighting can be useful in some settings, however, ambient lighting is really where it's at. And within that, lamps can be both functional and visually interesting.

  7. Intentional “moments.” Use little spaces to create vignettes, of sorts. For example, I have a thrifted vintage bookshelf that's styled with plants, framed pictures, a toy car that was my dad's, candles, and rocks/crystals. They work in harmony, display memories, and lay out some of my interests.

  8. Flow. Use design elements to distinguish areas. Key element: rugs. Also, the direction and arrangement of your furniture helps utilize space and create flow.

Personality shines not from following trends but from showcasing who you are through furniture with history, colorful accents, varying textures, interesting artwork, and thoughtful pieces.

And that, my friends, is where I shall leave you. Save this for later if it helped get your gears turning!
