Blue House Inspo
If you follow me on social media or we’re, like friends IRL lol, you’ll know that I’ve been doing a home renovation on the 70’s mid-century modern house that my dad bought when he was in his 30s.
The house was my first home before moving to the family house where I spent my childhood and teenage years. My dad rented it out for a few years but it was a demanding lot to upkeep so he let it sit and slowly “die” over the following 13, or so, years.
It took me a few years for me to convince him that I am capable of reviving the house. Historically, the house has been jam-packed with rich memories, interesting designs, and rewarding views. Up until digging in in 2023, the house was in utter disrepair, and of course, uninhabitable.
We’ve made so much progress up to this point. One thing that has helped me (and pretty much any other creative interest/pursuit/etc.) is coming back to solid inspiration to share with the contractors and keep things consistent in my mind.
Pinterest is a resource I use for soooo many things. Brand projects for clients, party-hosting ideas, DIY hacks, you name it, I have an organized board for it. This house project is no different. In fact, each element has its own set of inspiration boards.
My personal interior style is very literally reflected in all of the Blue House decisions. Considering the amount of time and excitement that went into the Pinterest board, I thought sharing would be a fun peek into the BTS, if you will.
I’ll focus on the more populated boards for sake of attention spans (both yours and mine 😅).
Let’s start with the living room:
The house was built in 1970 and flexes a unique mid-century modern style throughout the interior and exterior. Lucky for meeee, that’s my fave fave fave. With the living room specifically, I wanted to maintain that MCM look while also infusing some of my more eclectic vibes. This board does a good job reflecting the natural and minimal elements of MCM while also having some details that add more personality. Delicious.
Next, let’s have a look at dining room vibes:
I’ve had such a specific atmosphere I wanted to achieve with the dining room. The windows are huge and there’s a big blank wall behind the table. Including built-ins and other custom elements have been part of the conversation as well.
Bedroom viiiibes:
Looking at the quintessential 70s MCM bedroom is the sweet spot for the house. There are original white globe lights in there as well, thank the lordt!!
Moving on to the bathroom:
Goals: bright, light, clean, minimal, neutral, PLANTS!
Next up, kitchen:
The cabinets in the kitchen are original and still in greaaaat condition so, we’re keeping them as-is. Design elements to focus on: backsplash tile, countertop, appliances, sink, light pendants, bar stools.
Home office vibes:
Space-wise, having the office space in the living room makes the most sense. Looking for desks, accents, plants, and organization ideas were key.
Rounding it out with some sweet, whimsical, outdoor inspo:
I love little fairy gardens, bb gnomes, and cool bird houses. They just bring out that youthful excitement for me. I do think there’s a line between well-done and kitschy, my goal is to stray from kitschy and make it look like time, effort, and style went into it! This part is for down the line in the process, but it’s still fun to daydream about it!
That’s it, y’all! These are just snapshots of what has been hours of curating, researching, etc. simplified into clear inspiration boards. Gotta love it!
